AI search visibility is a fast-moving space, and the industry is still mapping out which existing assets translate across to it. One connection that’s becoming increasingly clear is the role of paid search; it’s a more direct link than most teams have yet had the chance to explore.

The assets inside a Google Ads account search term data, proven ad copy, product feeds, and landing pages built for conversion map directly onto what AI search systems use when deciding which businesses to surface. According to new research, ChatGPT is already showing ads on 26% of commercial prompts, putting it close to Google AI Mode’s 29.45% ad rate. AI search isn’t a future channel. It’s active now, and existing PPC investment is already more relevant to it than the industry has fully appreciated.

AI Search Is Already a Paid Channel, and the Numbers Are Significant

SE Ranking’s study analysed more than 50,000 commercial prompts across 20 niches and found sponsored placements on 25.94% of them. That figure sits close to Google AI Mode’s ad rate and confirms that ChatGPT is already monetising commercial intent at meaningful scale.

The current ChatGPT ad experience differs from Google in a few important ways. Every ad observed appeared below the generated response, with a single sponsored offer and no competing advertiser alongside it. Targeting doesn’t use conventional keywords. Advertisers instead provide natural-language context hints describing the conversations where they want their ads to appear.

Relevance, however, remains inconsistent. Around 14.35% of ChatGPT ads were effectively unrelated to the prompt they accompanied. The problem varied significantly by category:

Category Irrelevant Ad Rate
Pets 2.6%
Healthcare Low
Relationships Over 50%
News and Politics Over 50%

Advertisers also don’t currently have visibility into the specific conversations that triggered their ads, making diagnosis difficult. Precise context hints, audience targeting, and ongoing testing will matter considerably more here than they do in traditional paid search.

Paying for an AI Ad Doesn’t Make You an AI Citation

Of all advertisers whose ads appeared in ChatGPT, only 3.63% were also cited as a source in the AI-generated answer above their ad. The exact advertised URL appeared in citations just 0.09% of the time. Advertiser brands were mentioned in the response itself on only 4.44% of occasions.

Paid placement and AI citation are almost entirely separate outcomes. A business can buy visibility in ChatGPT and still have no presence in the answer a user actually reads and trusts.

This matters because it reframes what AI search strategy actually requires. Buying an ad is a starting point; earning a citation is a different challenge. And it’s one that the assets inside your paid search account are well positioned to address.

Your Ad Account Already Contains What AI Systems Need

The case for treating your PPC account as an AI visibility asset comes from understanding what AI search tools actually use when deciding which businesses to surface. According to Search Engine Land, a Google Ads account contains asset types that translate directly into AI search signals:

  • Search term data shows the exact language customers use across every stage of their journey, including long, conversational queries that closely resemble the prompts people type into ChatGPT. Broad match and Performance Max campaigns have been matching ads to natural-language searches for years; that data is a direct preview of how your audience talks to AI tools.
  • Ad copy performance data reveals which value propositions, offers, and phrasings earn clicks and conversions with real buyers. As AI search has emerged, this has highlighted a new consideration: the specific claims and guarantees that perform best in ads need to also exist as crawlable, on-page text. AI tools only see the website, so making sure the strongest messaging from the ad account is reflected on relevant pages is now a meaningful part of AI visibility.
  • Conversion data identifies which products, services, and pages drive real revenue, not just traffic. This is the prioritisation layer for deciding which pages are worth optimising for AI citation first.
Product feed infrastructure, with structured titles, attributes, images, and current pricing, is already formatted for machine learning. Product feed quality is now a primary eligibility signal for Shopping and Performance Max ads appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode. OpenAI rolled out product feed ads in May 2026, meaning the same feed can now power visibility across both Google and ChatGPT simultaneously.
  • Landing pages built for Quality Score and conversion already meet several of the criteria AI systems favour: relevance, clarity, and specificity of claims.

How to Put These Assets to Work

1. Check That AI Crawlers Can Access Your Site

Confirm your site is indexed in Bing and verified in Bing Webmaster Tools. ChatGPT’s search function relies on Bing’s index. Check your robots.txt file to ensure OAI-SearchBot and other AI crawlers aren’t blocked. This is the foundational step everything else builds on.

2. Mine Your Search Terms Report for Conversational Queries

Export 12 months of search terms and filter for queries of five or more words, questions, and comparisons. These are the conversational searches that most closely resemble what people type into ChatGPT. Group them by theme and conversion value, then treat the list as a prioritised set of questions your website must answer explicitly. This replaces speculative guesswork with observed demand you’ve already paid to discover.

3. Publish Your Best Ad Copy as Page Content

Identify your top-performing responsive search ad assets by conversion rate, then verify each high-performing claim exists as crawlable, on-page text. Specific numbers, timeframes, guarantees, and prices are exactly what AI tools tend to quote in responses. If that language only lives in your ad platform, AI systems can’t access or cite it. Adding schema markup reinforces those claims for both search engines and AI crawlers.

4. Upgrade Your Product Feed for AI Platforms

Rewrite product titles in descriptive, natural language and complete any optional attributes you’ve been skipping. Keep pricing and availability current. Then submit your feed directly to OpenAI so ChatGPT’s shopping results pull from your actual data. One well-maintained feed now supports paid and organic visibility across both Google and ChatGPT.

5. Set Up AI Traffic Tracking and Test Paid AI Placements

Add tracking in your analytics for visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and copilot.microsoft.com to establish a baseline before expanding into paid placements. Once that’s in place, ensure your Google campaigns are eligible to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode through Shopping, Performance Max, or AI Max for Search. For ChatGPT specifically, the self-serve ads platform is available now, and the early-mover window for testing context hints and refining targeting is open.

Why We Care

AI search visibility is being presented as something that requires an entirely new approach. For most businesses, that framing is creating unnecessary complexity and unnecessary spend.

The data tells a more straightforward story. ChatGPT is already serving ads on roughly one in four commercial prompts. Paid AI placement and AI citation are almost entirely separate outcomes; neither can substitute for the other. And the assets that drive AI citation eligibility structured content, specific claims on relevant pages, well-maintained product feeds, and evidence of commercial intent are already present in any account that’s been running paid search with discipline.

The PPC and SEO work already in place is the foundation. Extending it into AI search isn’t a rebuild; it’s a smarter use of what already exists.
