In April 2021, we wrote a post on the delay of the Google Page experience rollout. And ever since Google made the first announcement regarding the update, we understood that it would impact mobile search ranking only. However, today we are writing to inform you that the Google Page experience will be launched on mobile and desktop as well.

What has been announced?

Google has mentioned that although the Page Experienced, which was only meant to impact mobile search, has been delayed to mid-June, it will now also apply to desktop search.

Google revealed this information last week on Google I/O (input/output) as the session was focused on preparing for the Page Experience update.

“Today I am happy to announce that we are bringing Page Experience ranking to desktop. While we’re launching Page Experience on mobile soon, we believe page experience is critical no matter the surface the user is browsing the web. This is why we’re working hard on bringing page experience ranking to desktop. As always we’ll be providing updated guidance, documentation, and tools along the way to help your pages perform at its best. Stay tuned for more details on this.”

– Jeffrey Jose, a product manager on Google Search

The phrasing of Jose’s comment makes it sound as though there will be a different set of criteria for the Page experience update on mobile compared to desktop. Considering the different expectations users have about the desktop page experience compared to mobile page experience, the different criteria would make sense. Furthermore, the difference in how web pages load on desktop compared to mobile makes a significant impact.

For now, we know the Page Experience update for mobile is scheduled to be rolled out in June. We are unsure if this will include the Page Experience update for desktop as well. Jose did state that Google will provide further documentation before the desktop update goes live.

Why should you care?

Knowing the Page Experience update rollout has been delayed has given companies more time to prepare; however, the news regarding the same update being rolled out on desktop was unexpected yet necessary. Page Experience is different on mobile and desktop, so this news is beneficial to companies as it will only improve their customer’s experience on their websites regardless of whether it is mobile or desktop. Considering the page experience update for mobile search is rolling out in June, we hope Google will give companies sufficient time to prepare for the desktop page experience update before launching the rollout.
