In today’s blog post we will be getting into the release of the upgraded Bard; Gemini. Since the release of Bard, the world has criticised this AI tool quite significantly. When Bard was initially launched, it had the persistent issue of answering very simple questions incorrectly, which affected the manner in which users trusted this tool. Now with the rebranding of Bard to Gemini, Google is certain it can handle complex tasks such as coding and creativity. Google has also taken this one step further to release a Gemini mobile app to provide easy AI access on Android and iOS phones.

What’s the difference?

Since the launch of Bard, Vice President and General Manager of Gemini has carefully watched and taken note of how individuals have applied AI to their everyday lives. These findings have shown that individuals use AI in an incredibly diverse way, for example from writing an email to creating images. To add to this, CEO Sundar Pichai, explains that Gemini is the mark of a new era for AI as it will now give users access to “the most capable large language model (LLM) yet”.

Gemini uses a new model called the Ultra 1.0 model. It is this model that will allow it to become the most capable LLM mentioned previously.  More specifically, Gemini has been upgraded to have an advanced reasoning power, which allows it to think more “carefully”. This will address those previous issues of Bard’s ability to answer simple questions that were mentioned previously as well as any other hallucinations AI tools often experience.

To take the above one step further, Gemini is multimodal meaning that it can understand audio, text, video and computer code simultaneously. This allows for the tool to have a more comprehensive and rich understanding of the real world. When it comes to text, it has been emphasised that the tool has significant understanding from an emotional and cultural point of view, leading to more natural and engaging responses. This ability allows it to capture humour, sarcasm, and emotional undertones in human language. Bard’s responses on the other hand, might have lacked these nuances due to its less sophisticated model.

Gemini has also been incorporated into Google products such as Google Workspace, which leads to the next feature of Gemini. Gemini Advanced.

Gemini Advanced

Gemini Advanced is essentially an iteration of Gemini where it will be able to answer complex, creative problems. Gemini Advanced additionally has the ability to hold long conversations due to advanced filtering capabilities which essentially allows users to refer to previous interactions when using Gemini. The LLM’s model structure is refined to better grasp human language nuances too, which has resulted in more natural and engaging responses compared to Bard.

Arguably one of the most important features of Gemini Advanced, is that it can access and process information from the real world through Google Search and other services too, providing more relevant and up-to-date responses. This real-world connection enables Gemini to adapt its responses based on the latest information and trends, offering a more dynamic and informative experience. Answers that are provided, additionally link to the source and therefore allows the user to double-check their answers or to take part in further analysis.

Because Gemini Advanced will be integrated into the user’s entire Google Workspace, this AI tool has been likened to a personal tutor, or just someone to bounce ideas off of.

Gemini: The Mobile App

There has been an uproar of demand when it comes to AI, and Google’s answer to this is through a Gemini mobile app for both Android and IOS users. This will additionally allow for a seamless user experience on Google Search as well as any Google home devices users may have. The app is currently available on Android, and will soon be available on IOS.

Why do we care?

Since the launch of AI, there have been a lot of conversations about how these tools may or may not impact search and search habits. With the launch of Gemini, due to the fact that it addresses many of the flaws of Bard, and its increased conversation capabilities it would be interesting to take note of how users may engage in search in the future. Are they likely to take part in more conversational search or stick to shorter-tail keywords? This would be an interesting possible trend to keep note of. Additionally, Gemini’s ability to access real time information, opens the door for search marketers to improve their content development skills. Finally, the mobile app’s integration with Google Search and devices allows for deeper user engagement and potentially impacts search strategies.
